EDISON HURLEY: OPEN
The tale of Edsion Hurley begins in Twin Gulch and if he’s not careful, it will end in Twin Gulch – and relatively soon. As a young man with a belly full of pride and a pocket full of meager earnings, he took up post as a deputy in Twin Gulch when he was old enough. His skills made it easy for him to quickly make a name for himself as being the deputy with the best shot in three counties. He could out-gun and out-ride almost any man or woman for miles and it wasn’t long before he became a well-known name and face in the basin. But the years were not kind to Edison. Only a few short years after their nuptials, a bought a scarlet fever took both his wife and his young son away from him. Unable to cope with their loss, he turned to drowning himself in the drink, gambling, and other vices simply to put himself out of his misery. Years of abusing alcohol and leading a generally poor lifestyle led to severe nerve damage and suddenly he wasn’t such a crack shooter anymore. So maybe that’s why when Rufus “Old Fuss” Buck from the Grayhollow gang came into his town and offered to strike a deal, the old dog relented. Grayhollow keeps his pockets lined and his bottles full and he lets their minor transgressions slide. Some of the young deputies in Twin Gulch are determined to oust the belligerent old bastard, but they’ve not had any success yet.

WAYLAN DRAKE: TAKEN
Waylan Drake is Twin Gulch’s resident sane person. In all of the chaos of life settling the American west, it’s sometimes hard to find a little piece of rationality in it all. That is what Waylan is trying to provide to the residents of the basin. He is a deputy for the Twin Gulch sheriff’s department and is about as contrary to Edison Hurley as anyone can get. Dedicated, helpful, and selfless, he steps in to protect those who can’t protect themselves and does whatever he can to make his town safe from the local gang threats… even if that means stepping on the sheriff’s toes every once in a while. Though Waylan has no solid evidence that the Grayhollow gang is paying of Hurley to let them get away with their dirty business in his town, he’s convinced the old sheriff is in their pocket and he’s damn sure going to find a way to prove it. He knows the man is as crooked as they come. When he’s not digging for dirt on Hurley, Waylan is the good ‘ol fashioned helpful sort who spends his time keeping the peace with the petty criminal squabbles of locals. Most recently, he’s been spending time at the Marlow ranch helping his childhood friend Charlotte get back on her feet. It doesn’t seem like the hard life of the west has broken his spirit yet.

CHARLOTTE MARLOW: TAKEN
For over a decade, Marlow Ranch has been one the most profitable businesses in the territory. Charles Marlow worked the land with his own two hands from the ground up until he was producing and selling most of the cattle and horses that came in and out of basin. He quickly amassed a large wealth in money and land – both of which were coveted by the greedy Judge Sawyer who owned the sawmill that neighbored the ranch. When an accident brought his short life to an end, his properties and care of the ranch fell to the eldest of two daughters, Charlotte “Charlie” Marlow. As the eldest daughter to a rancher with no sons, Charlotte naturally fell into the role of the no-nonsense women who spent her entire life up to her elbows in dust and manure. The plan had always been for the ranch to be passed down to her – she just hadn’t expected it so suddenly. Despite all of the support and help from the ranch’s staff and her childhood friend Deputy Drake, Charlie has never felt more alone. She’s struggling with keeping the ranch going from her simple lack of business knowledge and a lingering suspicion of Judge Sawyer’s involvement in her father’s convenient passing nags at her daily. But she pulls herself up by her bootstraps and keeps pushing forward. She and her sister are all they have left of eachother so she resolves to stay strong… even if it’s just for Cordelia’s sake.

CORDELIA MARLOW: TAKEN
Cordelia had always been daddy’s little girl. She was never really spoiled or treated differently, but as a young daughter of a wealthy ranch owner she didn’t want for much. But papa was always good about making sure it didn’t come for free. He instilled a hearty work-ethic in the Marlow girls and Cordelia was always willing to lend a hand when she could . But her father’s sudden death had affected her in ways she hadn’t expected. She was a kind and gentle woman, never really having found reason to stray far from the ranch – why would she? Everything she ever needed was there. Her father, her sister, her horses – what more could a girl want for? But after Charles’ death Cordelia felt an emptiness inside that couldn’t be satisfied by the simple pleasures that she used to enjoy. She began growing curious about life outside the ranch. The stories of rustlers and gangs fed her curiosity more than any other, though Charlotte does her best to keep her younger sister from becoming too curious about them. She doesn’t mean to make Charlie worry – she just can’t help but feel like there’s more out there for her.

JUDGE SAWYER: TAKEN
Judge Sawyer was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. His family came from old money in the basin and he is very careful with his fortunes. When it comes to finances Sawyer is a careful man, only investing in what he is certain will prosper. He acts like he owns the basin – as far as many townsfolk are concerned he might as well. The only other economic contender in the area besides Sawyer’s Sawmill was the Marlow Ranch, the sprawling livestock producer with which the mill shares a border. Judge has spent decades trying to run Charles Marlow off his land so he could acquire it, but to no luck. Coincidental then it seemed for Judge Sawyer that the late Charles Marlow had an unfortunate “accident” that left the ranch in the fumbling hands of his eldest daughter, Charlotte. Judge Sawyer was not an honest man by any means and he knew an opportunity when he saw one. People suspect he had a hand in Charles’ death, but nobody has ever been able to prove him anything shy of a law abiding family man. He has been married twice in his life, both wives dying before him but the first leaving him with a beautiful daughter. Sawyer is also aware of the supernaturals that lurk in the basin, though nobody is quite sure how. He keeps this knowledge a secret – for now – and pockets it away for when it becomes advantageous of him to exploit it.

ADEWALE CORSAIR: OPEN
Adewale and his wife had been slaves to a wealthy cotton plantation owner in the Carolinas long ago. During the war the two smuggled, cheated, and fought their way to freedom, eventually escaping down south to Mexico. Their lives weren’t perfect, but they had eachother and they were happy… for a time. The truth about what happened to his wife isn’t really known. When the subject matter is brought up, it is often met with violent animosity and careful deflection and folks often learn after the first outburst to never ask about it again. Adewale arrived in the Northwind Basin territory over a decade ago. He had an eye for weaponry and knew the best guns when he saw them. It seemed he also had a knack for procuring difficult items when others couldn’t, which made him very popular among outlaws and lawmen alike. What he couldn’t get his hands on, he’d craft himself. Despite their best efforts, threats from both the Farrow Creek gang and Grayhollow gang in an effort to dissuade him from peddling his goods to the other fell on deaf ears again and again. Both pack alphas had tried their hand at forcing the rogue to submit more than once, but Adewale was a tough old bastard who had been through enough real bullshit to ignore the petty squabbles of two packs. Eventually the packs grew bored of his tactics and learned to just leave the old rogue alone so long as he promised to keep supplying them with weapons, which he did – so long as they kept paying him.

DIEGO RAMOS: TAKEN
Diego Ramos isn’t like the rest of his vampire brethren, and even calling them that turns his stomach at the thought. He doesn’t like to think of himself as being anything close to the monsters that the rest of them were. After his turning, he and his sire parted ways on less than amicable terms as they could not see eye to eye on how their kind should act. His sire was a true vampire and saw humans for what they were – prey that served a single purpose in feeding them. Diego was an honorable man and even after his turning he found it difficult to seduce or trick others into becoming his dinner. After their separation Diego settled in Blackacre and naturally fell into the skills of his former life as a butcher, putting them to good use and managing to carve a life for himself. He survives nearly exclusively on the blood of the animals he slaughters and has absolutely zero interest in the affairs of the Conclave one way or another. If he had any choice in the matter, they’d leave him alone… but the queen isn’t so keen on having rogue vampires in her territory and he is finding it more and more difficult to hide from the people she sends after him.

VIOLET SAWYER: OPEN
Unlike her father, Violet is blissfully unaware of the supernaturals that lurk in the basin. She has always been a curious woman who yearned to see life outside of her father’s grasp. Being the only daughter to Judge Sawyer isn’t an easy occupation, especially when half the town hates your father or suspects him of murder. Loving her father isn’t an easy task either – he’s difficult to get along with and being his daughter only made him harsher in the rules he set for her. When she was old enough, Violet left her father’s home in search of pursuing her own passion that seemed to directly counteract her father’s – helping others. She began to study medicine in whatever fashion she could get her hands on. At first it was simply working with the local ranchers and breeders to help them with the care of their livestock until the local doctor in towndecided to take her under his wing and show her what he knew. Though she has no formal medical training, he’s taught her almost everything she knows and she’s eager to learn more. She’s trying to best to live outside of her father’s shadow, but sometimes a name like ‘Sawyer’ is enough to hold you back. Violet is determined not to let her father’s reputation outlive her.
